Pagbawi! People's Forum on Mining

To our friends and colleagues:

Warm, environmental greetings!

The global mining industry is facing an unprecedented crisis: the top 40 mining transnational corporations or TNCs experienced a massive downturn in its net profits in the past two years, dropping from $138 billion in 2011 to $20 billion in 2013.

Faced with growing resource nationalism and grassroots resistance in the context of massive minerals overproduction and contracting demand, the aggressive expansionism of mining TNCs in PH seemed to struggle but TNCs with existing mine projects became more intent to protect their investments and profits.

In the coming annual Mine Philippines 2014 Conference of the Chamber of Mines, one of the leading mining industry lobby groups, mining TNCs are expected to step up efforts in waxing rhetoric of responsible mining and greenwashing.

In this context, the Defend Patrimony! Alliance, the leading national network opposed to mining liberalization and plunder, will hold the PAGBAWI!: a Parallel People’s Forum to the Mine Philippines 2014 Conference on September 17, 9:00AM to 12:00NN at the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) Conference Center, at the back of the IFI National Cathedral, 1500 Taft Avenue, Ermita, Manila.
